In Malawi, over 80% of people depend on farming to survive—but soil degradation and deforestation make it hard to grow enough food. Poverty, unemployment, and limited access to education and healthcare add to the challenge. Plant With Purpose helps farmers restore their land with regenerative techniques, improving crop yields and family income. Stronger farms mean better nutrition, education, and stability. Despite these struggles, Malawians’ warmth and generosity remain strong. Restoring the land is restoring hope and strengthening communities.

A strong start in Malawi

Plant With Purpose is starting its work in Malawi, focusing on watersheds in the steep Vipya Plateau region where deforestation and poverty are severe. The first two years will focus on creating Purpose Groups and building church partnerships to strengthen communities. Plant With Purpose will help families restore the land and improve their economic stability by combining regenerative agriculture and savings groups alongside church, school and community partnerships. A local team and board guide the work, ensuring long-term impact. Healing the land will strengthen relationships and hope.

Mary, a single mother from Malawi, faced deep hardship and spiritual doubt after being abandoned by her family. Plant With Purpose helped her reconnect with her faith and discover the importance of creation care. “Being a representative of Plant With Purpose in my church, I’m glad I can teach about creation care confidently,” Mary said. She now teaches others how to care for the environment, recognizing it as a sacred duty. Her work has strengthened both her faith and her community. Mary’s story shows the power of restoring both land and relationships.

Daniel, a pastor and lifelong resident of the Lwafwa watershed in Malawi, witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of deforestation—dry soil, unpredictable rains, shrinking crop yields, and eroded trust within his community. When Plant With Purpose began its work in November 2023, offering training on tree planting, watershed restoration, and faith-rooted stewardship, Daniel and his neighbors started to see tangible improvements. Supported by his church and a local Purpose Group, he helped plant woodlots and home trees, which not only improved soil moisture and agricultural output but also fostered communal accountability and deepened relational trust. As Daniel puts it, “When people see change, they start to believe again”—a testament to how environmental restoration, economic cooperation, and spiritual renewal interconnect in healing the land and the people.

Leswika from Malawi grew up watching her family cut down trees for charcoal to survive, but it was damaging the land. A training session with Plant With Purpose changed her outlook. "It was a revelation," she said, realizing the land was a gift from God. She committed to regenerative farming and stopped the charcoal business. Now, she helps her community care for the land and sees herself as a steward of creation. "We can end the charcoal-burning business," she shares confidently.

First, countries are selected based on an assessment of readiness including the level of poverty, environmental degradation and deforestation, and vulnerability of the people as well as a community’s mutual interest and readiness to work with us. Once a country is finalized, work goes into hiring a country director and board of directors to oversee the program, selecting target watersheds, and establishing a program budget.
