Haiti has lost over 98% of its original forests—poverty and deforestation fuel each other as families cut down trees to sell charcoal, making farming even harder. Civil unrest and natural disasters add to the struggle, but Plant With Purpose farmers are showing incredible resilience. By restoring land and empowering communities, they are breaking the cycle and building a more stable future. Relationships between people and the land are healing—hope is growing.

Security and Resilience

Plant With Purpose helps small farming families in Haiti plant trees, improve soil health, and prevent erosion—restoring their land and livelihoods. Savings groups give families financial security and resources to start businesses. Spiritual renewal empowers them with a sense of purpose and hope, even in the face of political and economic challenges. By healing the land and strengthening relationships, communities are building a more stable and hopeful future.

What leadership looks like in Haiti

What leadership looks like in Haiti

My name is Dorcilus. I have been a participant of a Purpose Group in Cornillon for 4 years. I am very happy and proud to talk about my wonderful experience with Plant With Purpose. In fact, I did not have the opportunity to go to an agriculture school before, but thanks to the training in soil conservation techniques, tree nursery, composting, grafting, and natural pesticides that I received from Plant With Purpose, I do feel very proud to consider myself a capable agriculture technician. It is delightful for me to stand under the trees that I planted on my first farm when it is raining and observe that the light rain cannot spray me, so dense is the tree cover on my farm. That is why, this quarter, thanks to the encouragement and instruction I received from Plant With Purpose staff, I have been devoted to planting about 2,000 trees close to this beautiful farm in other areas to create more impact in Haiti.

Pierre’s connection to the land deepened after joining a Purpose Group. “I am a steward of creation,” he shares. Through Plant With Purpose, he learned reforestation techniques and how to manage loans, helping him improve his farm and grow a business reselling animals. His leadership as a forest guardian inspired his community to join efforts in environmental restoration. “Now, the environment matters to all of us,” Pierre reflects. His story shows how restoring the land also restores relationships.

Nathalie’s life changed after joining a Purpose Group through Community Designed Restoration (CDR). “I have respect for trees, and I plant a lot because I am very concerned about erosion,” she shares. Learning soil conservation, natural pesticides, and grafting helped her improve her farm and income. With savings and loans from her Purpose Group, Nathalie now pays for her children's school and invests in her business. “I feel empowered to take care of my family,” she says. Her role as a leader inspires others to care for their land and community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Haiti is currently experiencing a high level of political unrest that does pose risks to our teams in Port-au-Prince and as they mobilize to our targets areas. However, the remote areas where we implement our program are safe to operate. We are taking all necessary precautions to reduce exposure and risks.
To best protect the safety of local teams and families, Plant With Purpose consults with crisis management organizations. As a policy, we do not take unnecessary risk and our teams maintain a low profile. We are in constant communication with other organizations and partners in the field to assess risks day by day.
Plant With Purpose does not provide aid but instead, sustainable development. We have seen incredible impact in the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Entire communities significantly reduce their poverty and ecosystems begin to recover. The testimonies of transformation motivate us to continue to bring hope one person and one household at a time. While we cannot directly impact the political unrest, we believe our Watershed Model will continue to bring environmental, economic, and spiritual hope to the people of Haiti.
