Burundi
Burundi faces severe poverty and hunger—over 70% of people live in poverty. The scars of war and environmental damage have left families vulnerable, especially women and children.
The long-lasting effects of war and poverty in Burundi have especially impacted women and children. Women are the leaders of many households, and these households are fragile due to a lack of resources. Nine out of ten Burundians depend on agriculture for their livelihood, yet their limited farmland is devastated by deforestation, drought, war, and over-farming.

Veriane’s life changed when she joined a Purpose Group and took out a small loan to buy a pig. “I used the manure to fertilize my crops, and the results were incredible,” she says. Her farm’s increased yield provided her family with food security and financial stability. The biggest change, though, was in her children. They now feel proud and hopeful about their future, seeing that hard work leads to success. “My children have hope—they believe they can succeed,” Veriane shares.
