Burundi faces severe poverty and hunger—over 70% of people live in poverty. The scars of war and environmental damage have left families vulnerable, especially women and children.

The long-lasting effects of war and poverty in Burundi have especially impacted women and children. Women are the leaders of many households, and these households are fragile due to a lack of resources. Nine out of ten Burundians depend on agriculture for their livelihood, yet their limited farmland is devastated by deforestation, drought, war, and over-farming.

Plant With Purpose in Burundi

Since 2008, Plant With Purpose has partnered with local communities to rebuild lives and land:

🙏 Strengthening Faith – Local churches help heal relationships and inspire hope.
🌳 Restoring the Land – Tree planting and regenerative farming improve food security.
💰 Empowering Families – Savings groups provide financial stability and growth.

Restoring Hope and Dignity

We partner with local churches that actively disciple community members and address community needs. Farmers of all ethnic backgrounds are collaborating to plant seeds of peace and reconciliation through Plant With Purpose. Churches are empowering community members and raising local leaders. As food security increases, we are witnessing spiritual revival restore hope and dignity.

Partners for advancement in Burundi

In some of our program areas across Burundi, Plant With Purpose partners with Hope International to help communities access essential financial tools through savings groups. This partnership empowers families to build economic stability, invest in their farms, and support each other. By combining financial training with spiritual support, communities grow stronger together—restoring not only their livelihoods but also their faith and relationships.

Kagabo’s life transformed after joining a Purpose Group. “Before, I could only grow 22 pounds of corn—now I produce over 220 pounds,” he says. Learning regenerative farming techniques helped him increase his harvest and provide for his family. He also gained financial security through savings groups and spiritual renewal through local church involvement. “We know our priorities now,” Kagabo reflects. His story shows how holistic support can create lasting change.

Belise’s journey began with uncertainty, but everything changed when she joined a Purpose Group. "I didn’t know how to farm effectively or manage money," she recalls. Through training in regenerative agriculture and savings groups, she gained confidence and stability. Over time, she not only improved her family’s life but also became a group facilitator, guiding others toward success. "Now I help other women find hope and purpose," Belise shares. Her story reflects the power of learning and leadership.

Changing how my children see themselves

Changing how my children see themselves

Veriane’s life changed when she joined a Purpose Group and took out a small loan to buy a pig. “I used the manure to fertilize my crops, and the results were incredible,” she says. Her farm’s increased yield provided her family with food security and financial stability. The biggest change, though, was in her children. They now feel proud and hopeful about their future, seeing that hard work leads to success. “My children have hope—they believe they can succeed,” Veriane shares.

Frequently Asked Questions

In 2008, we started working in various parts of Burundi. Currently we work in some of the most rural areas of Burundi in four different provinces with plans to expand our program to new areas. Burundi is one of the poorest and most food insecure countries in the world. Heavy deforestation over the past few decades resulted in more families living in conditions of poverty.
Yes, it is relatively safe for our team in Burundi to work. The local leadership plays a key role in keeping a pulse on the security situation. They also maintain protocols to (if needed) navigate uncertain and/or unstable periods of time.
We begin our work in the most rural areas where families depend on the land for survival. These are the areas where our Watershed Model is proven to be the most effective. Families in these rural areas have the skills and abilities to improve their conditions and work with their community to develop a better way of life.
