My name is Nicole O’Brien. I am a full-time watercolor painting artist. I live in rural northeast Iowa on a farm surrounded by animals and agricultural fields. Hence, the name of my business, “Color Splash Ranch.” The subject matter of my art is usually nature and the creatures that inhabit our planet.
An artist’s work generally reflects their perspectives and experiences, and my art is no exception. I strive to capture the beauty and delight that can be found in creation, hoping that it inspires the viewer to not only appreciate nature, but also be motivated to preserve our environment for future generations. Because I love painting the environment so much, it just made sense to partner with Plant With Purpose, an organization that promotes responsible agricultural techniques that restore the ecosystems on our beautiful planet. Often, charities focus on either the environment or poverty, pitting these causes against one another. So I appreciate Plant With Purpose’s commitment to solving the challenges of poverty by creating a win-win solution for both the environment and the people living there. Plant With Purpose has a unique strategy that empowers the communities to strategically plant trees and diversify crops, resulting in more profitable incomes and hopeful futures for rural families.
As a Christian, I am equally concerned with the well-being of humans and their eternal destiny.. I also believe it is important to pass your blessings on to help others. This belief is what motivated me to partner with a nonprofit that reflects my priorities and values. I love that Plant With Purpose is dedicated to teaching sustainable agricultural methods, and committed to spreading hope through the message of Christ’s love. It is this combination of priorities and values that have motivated me to support Plant With Purpose.
Every job can become a grind in certain seasons, and being an artist is no exception. When I am setting up for an art fair in 90-degree weather, or facing another exceptionally long stretch of studio time during the winter, I remind myself of my “why” – not only does my art hopefully bring joy and life into a person’s home, but the income I earn helps improve the quality of life in other rural communities around the world. I am honored to partner with such an impactful organization, and although my art may have a small impact in the world, I am grateful knowing that I am helping Plant With Purpose transform the world in a measurable, positive way.
