Tanzania faces harsh impacts from climate change. Mt. Kilimanjaro’s ice cap is rapidly disappearing, with only 20% left. Tanzania’s dry climate causes much of the melted ice to evaporate instead of replenishing the land. Streams from Mt. Kilimanjaro and the South Pare Mountains feed the Pangani River, supporting agriculture and fishing for around three million people. Environmental damage and climate change are putting these livelihoods at risk. Plant With Purpose is working to protect these vital ecosystems and support local communities.

Investing in female farmers

Since 2004, Plant With Purpose has supported Tanzanian farmers, most of whom are women, including many widows and single mothers. Women and children are often the poorest in Tanzania, even though most women earn their living through farming. However, they face unequal access to training and resources, producing 20–30% less food than men. Plant With Purpose helps close this gap by providing tools, training, and support, empowering women to grow more food and secure their families’ futures. Restoring relationships with the land also restores hope.

Redemptive Agriculture

The Pangani River Basin is one of the world’s most important environmental areas, home to rare plant and animal species found nowhere else. Millions of people depend on the land for food and income. Plant With Purpose works in key watersheds here, helping farmers double crop production through sustainable agriculture. Farmers are also restoring the ecosystem by planting over a million trees each year. Through Plant With Purpose's creation care curriculum communities are learning to care for creation and support each other, rebuilding both the land and relationships.

"All my progress has inspired people around me"

"All my progress has inspired people around me"

After her husband’s sudden death, Giftiana was left to care for four children alone, struggling to make ends meet. “My husband used to be the one taking care of the family,” she shared. Selling bananas from her farm wasn’t enough, but joining a Plant With Purpose Group changed everything. Through training, she learned to save, manage loans, and grow her business. Now, she’s paying school fees and even building a modern home. “God has always been in the process,” she says. Giftiana’s success inspires her neighbors to join savings groups too.

Davina, a single mother of five from Tanzania, struggled to provide for her family through seasonal farming. “Our livelihoods rely on farming,” she said, but unpredictable harvests left her worried. After joining a Purpose Group, she learned about vegetable gardening, increasing her income and providing more food for her children. This boosted her family’s financial security and strengthened their bond. Inspired by her success, Davina started a tree nursery, ensuring future stability. “Resilience is key,” she reflects, determined to pass that lesson to her children.

Nafika, a single mother in Tanzania, struggled to pay her daughter's school fees due to unstable farm yields and business challenges. Joining a Purpose Group transformed her life. "The group ensured that I get school fees on time," she shares. With loans, she started a successful fish farm and a sugarcane juice business. Now, she teaches her daughter farming skills and dreams of seeing her thrive. "I see a future well-educated woman," Nafika says. Her story shows how farming supports education and family security.

Frequently Asked Questions

In 2004, we started working in Tanzania specifically in the Kilimanjaro region. Mt. Kilimanjaro is a key biodiversity and environmental spot in Africa, home to different groups of people that all depend on the health of the environment for their survival and most especially the rural farming families on the lower slopes of the mountain. We later expanded into watersheds at the top the South Pare mountains. The forests at the top of these mountains are important ecological areas and impact the lives of thousands of families. We plan additional expansion in the Pangani River Basin, which flows from Mt. Kilimanjaro to the Indian Ocean.
We are one of many organizations working together with the government of Tanzania and local authorities to protect and restore the forests near the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the South Pare mountains. Planting local species of trees in strategic locations has resulted in not only the increase of biodiversity but also renewing natural water sources that had previously dried up.
The Tanzanian government may be more stable compared to their neighboring countries, but the country as a whole is still quite under resourced versus the needs around this critical environmental region.
