Tanzania faces harsh impacts from climate change. Mt. Kilimanjaro’s ice cap is rapidly disappearing, with only 20% left. Tanzania’s dry climate causes much of the melted ice to evaporate instead of replenishing the land. Streams from Mt. Kilimanjaro and the South Pare Mountains feed the Pangani River, supporting agriculture and fishing for around three million people. Environmental damage and climate change are putting these livelihoods at risk. Plant With Purpose is working to protect these vital ecosystems and support local communities.

Investing in female farmers

Since 2004, Plant With Purpose has supported Tanzanian farmers, most of whom are women, including many widows and single mothers. Women and children are often the poorest in Tanzania, even though most women earn a living through farming. However, they face unequal access to training and resources, producing 20–30% less food than men. Plant With Purpose helps close this gap by providing tools, training, and support, empowering women to grow more food and secure their families’ futures. Restoring relationships with the land also restores hope.

Redemptive Agriculture

The Pangani River Basin is one of the world’s most important environmental areas, home to rare plant and animal species found nowhere else. Millions of people depend on the land for food and income. Plant With Purpose works in key watersheds here, helping farmers double crop production through sustainable agriculture. Farmers are also restoring the ecosystem by planting over a million trees each year. Through Plant With Purpose's creation care curriculum communities are learning to care for creation and support each other, rebuilding both the land and relationships.
