“Because of this partnership, I was able to take out a loan to buy a piece of land. I bought this so I could have more means to farm. I am really proud of what we’ve done with that land. I was also able to support the reconstruction of a community school along with other members of the community. Now our children will be receiving instruction.”
“As a leader, I must tune in to the spirituality of people here in the community,” concludes Eddy. “Plant With Purpose has helped me see how improving our material conditions is also very important. It is my responsibility.”
From Seedling to Success: Mihizo's Journey of Growth in the DRC
In the heart of the Kambekulu watershed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a field of vibrant mandarin trees stands as a testament to the transformative power of environmental restoration and community partnership. This orchard belongs to Mihizo, a member of the Tuudumishe Purpose Group, whose story embodies the positive change facilitated by Plant With Purpose.
Mihizo was among the first in his community to embrace the environmental restoration training and fruit tree plantation initiatives offered by Plant With Purpose. Recognizing the potential of these new skills, he took ownership of the learning process and established a citrus tree nursery on his land. This proactive step not only provided him with a source of income by selling seedlings to other farmers but also laid the foundation for his own future orchard.
Today, Mihizo stands as an exemplary farmer in Kambekulu, renowned for his expertise in cultivating young fruit seedlings. His dedication and hard work have allowed him to diversify his household income and effectively meet his family's needs. The income generated from his thriving orchard enables him to provide for food, school fees, healthcare, and even support social programs within his community. His oranges are highly sought after, and the revenue they generate has allowed him to initiate other income-generating activities for his wife, further strengthening their family's economic standing.
From Dry Lands to Healthy Communities
Valentina lives in Southern Mexico, on farmland that is prone to drought.
“My story is sad,” Valentina shares, recalling the challenges she faced before joining Plant With Purpose. “It was difficult for me to get ahead, I made mats to earn money and also sold tortillas so that my family could eat.” The struggle was particularly acute when her children were young. “When my children were small, it was difficult to get enough to eat,” she remembers.
Valentina has actively participated in several Plant With Purpose initiatives. These projects have brought about tangible improvements in her life and her community.

“The place where we reforest looks better, we must continue planting trees,” she says. Planting trees and cultivating the land has had a direct impact on her livelihood. “It has been a benefit to use the wood, and we have food from the crops.” The broader community has also benefited. “Yes, it has changed,” Valentina observes. “There are tall trees and they are giving life.” She understands the vital connection between healthy ecosystems and human well-being. “Having a dry ecological toilet improves the life of the environment and people's health. I see that through trees, humanity has life.”
Looking back on her journey with Plant With Purpose, Valentina expresses gratitude and pride. “My children got by with the little that I gave them. Today, God has given me life,” she reflects.
