Female farmers in Malawi, like many women in developing countries, face a unique set of challenges that include poverty, deforestation, and climate change. These challenges often have profound spiritual and psychological effects on their lives.
One of the most significant challenges faced by female farmers in Malawi is poverty. Limited access to resources, such as land, seeds, fertilizers, and technology, can hinder their ability to produce sufficient crops. This poverty can create a vicious cycle, as lack of income can prevent them from investing in their farms, further perpetuating their economic hardship.
Deforestation is another major issue that affects female farmers in Malawi. As forests are cleared for agriculture and other purposes, soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, and climate change become more prevalent. This can have devastating consequences for female farmers, who rely on healthy ecosystems for their livelihoods. Deforestation can lead to crop failures, water shortages, and increased vulnerability to natural disasters.
Mary is a resilient single mother who hails from the Lwafwa watershed. She faced adversity early in life, being orphaned at a young age then grappling with loss and illness.
A few years ago, Mary collapsed and her body was weakened by illness. To her dismay, none of her relatives extended a helping hand during her darkest hours. Mary felt abandoned, questioning whether God had forsaken her. She made a decision never to belong to any church. She didn’t even spend time in prayer, and she was hopeless.
In her solitude, she recalled her late father’s wisdom: “Never forsake God, no matter what.” Inspired by this memory, Mary turned back to her faith. Seeking solace, she found strength in prayer and reflection.
Mary’s life took an unexpected turn when she became involved with Plant With Purpose. Through her work and active participation in the program, she discovered profound truths. God’s care extended beyond the spiritual realm. It also encompasses creation and stewardship of the environment.
Plant With Purpose's programs integrate a spiritual focus into environmental restoration by fostering a sense of connection between individuals, their communities, and the natural world. We encourage participants to view environmental stewardship as a sacred responsibility, emphasizing the spiritual value of healthy ecosystems and the importance of living in harmony with nature. Through workshops, group discussions, and community projects, Plant With Purpose helps people develop a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things and a commitment to sustainable practices that honor both the physical and spiritual well-being of their communities.
One thing that Mary has learned about God is that God loves and works with all people regardless of one’s denomination. This is demonstrated by what Plant With Purpose is doing, working and bringing together different churches. In addition to that, Mary has learned that it pleases God when people are living at peace with one other. Finally, through the work of Plant With Purpose, Mary has learned that creation care is for everyone, and she will make sure that she plays her part in caring for the environment and will continue teaching others.
“Being a representative of Plant With Purpose in my church, I am glad that I can teach about creation care to the members, and I can do it confidently because I have understood the principles of agricultural development,” said Mary. Mary continued to say that through serving the people in her church, her faith has been encouraged.
Praise God for Mary and her testimony to God's goodness. Perhaps she is a "first female farmer voice" for creation care and the power of Plant with Purpose in her church and community. I pray God continues to provide all of her needs and those of her community as she trusts him, learns more, and speaks proudly.
