Meet Patuma–A determined mother from Malawi

In the quiet hills of Lwafwa, Malawi, a story of perseverance and restoration is unfolding. Patuma is a mother whose determination turned hardship into hope.
Patuma is married and the proud mother of four school-aged children. For years, life was far from easy. Her husband had separated from her and spent much of his time away, leaving Patuma and the children without reliable support.
No Food in the House
“There were many times we had no food in the house,” she recalls. “The children would study at night using a small battery-powered light because we had no electricity.”
Each day brought new uncertainty. Yet even in those moments, Patuma’s faith remained unbroken. “As a mother of four, time and again I could think of ways and means of getting out of poverty,” she says. “I knew I could not give up.”
A turning point arrived when Plant With Purpose partnered with her community and introduced Purpose Groups, locally-led groups designed to equip families with financial skills, regenerative agriculture training, and hope. Patuma joined one of these groups, determined to begin anew.
With her first small loan she purchased a few kilograms of baking flour and began a tiny mini-scone business in her village. “That first loan changed everything,” she explains. “Through the training, I learned how to manage my business well. Now I can make profits and repay my loans.”
From Small Beginnings

With guidance from Plant With Purpose’s business management training, she learned to budget, plan, and reinvest her income wisely. Her profits grew steadily, allowing her to support her family’s daily needs while saving for the future.
Her small baking venture became a lifeline and a symbol of her new independence. As her income stabilized, her husband returned home, and together they began rebuilding their lives and family.
Patuma decided to use part of her earnings to invest in solar energy for their home, which transformed their evenings. “My children are now able to read under solar light,” she said proudly. “It is helping them to work hard at school.”
The family’s new light represents the rekindling of hope. Life was hard for Patuma and her children. Today, she says she can finally see a better future.
When her Purpose Group completed its first savings cycle, Patuma received a significant return from her contributions, savings, and interest. She used the money to pay school fees and to buy several chickens, beginning a small livestock business. The chickens multiplied quickly. “Now I have enough to sell some and use others for food,” she explains. “This helps me take care of my family.”
Honoring God through Creation Care

As her confidence grew, Patuma took a second loan to expand her baking business. She increased her stock and began preparing to build a better home for her family. “Together with my husband and children, we started molding bricks for the foundation of our new house,” she says. “We have agreed as a family to build a good house with iron sheets and cement. It is our vision for a better future.”
Beyond the visible improvements in her life, a deeper transformation was taking place in Patuma’s heart. Through Plant With Purpose’s spiritual renewal and environmental restoration activities, she began to see her work as part of something greater. It was a way of honoring God through creation care.
“I used to think cutting trees was just part of survival,” she reflects. “But through the training, I learned that we must care for the land because it is God’s creation. Now, instead of cutting trees, I help plant them.”
Patuma regularly joins her Purpose Group in tree nursery work and environmental restoration events. When people plant trees, they help bring back rain and protect our soil. It is our responsibility as Christians to care for God’s creation.
She also attended training on energy-saving cookstoves and built her own Changu Changu Mbaula. This is a locally designed, efficient stove that uses less firewood and produces less smoke. “It protects my health and saves time,” she says. “It is good for the environment and for my family.”
The Light of Hope Now Shines for Patuma and Her Family
Today, Patuma continues to save faithfully in her Purpose Group. She plans to use her next share-out to finish their house and to invest in more livestock. “My journey of life has been miserable,” she reflects, “but now it is being transformed through the assets I have acquired.”
Her transformation is spiritual and relational. “This journey has shown me that when you have faith and work hard, God opens new doors,” she concludes.
Quiet Leadership Influencing a Community
In her community, she has become a quiet leader, inspiring others to join the Purpose Group and to believe in restoration. Her neighbors see the difference in her confidence, her home, and her faith.
Patuma’s life testifies to the truth that poverty is not inevitable. Change is possible when hope takes root and when people are equipped with the tools to cultivate it. Through the support of Plant With Purpose’s generous donors, women like Patuma are proving that solutions are real, available, and ready to be delivered.
As the evening light glows gently from her solar lamp, illuminating her children’s faces as they study, Patuma’s hope shines just as bright. She is a living witness to the transformation growing in the hills of Lwafwa.
