Magdalena, Tanzania: "I want to inspire others to believe"

Magdalena stands in front of her shop, greeting customers with a warm smile. The shop, now a thriving retail and wholesale business, is a testament to years of hard work, perseverance, and the power of community support. But it wasn’t always like this.

At 50 years old, Magdalena reflects on the life she once lived in her small village in the Shengena West watershed of Tanzania. She and her husband, 51, worked tirelessly—running a small retail shop, farming their land, and raising their three children. Yet despite their efforts, making ends meet felt like an endless struggle.

"We Were Always Just Getting By"

Before joining a Purpose Group years ago, Magdalena’s family faced constant financial challenges. “The profit from our shop wasn’t enough,” she recalls. “All my children were at home, and we were also caring for two other relatives. We often had to settle for just two meals a day, and our house was very small, with only two rooms for the entire family.”

Their farm provided some food, but there was never enough income to expand their shop or improve their living conditions. They longed to grow their business, but accessing loans was nearly impossible. “We didn’t have collateral, so banks wouldn’t lend to us. It felt like we had no way forward.”

Then, Magdalena heard about an opportunity that would change her life. A team from Plant With Purpose visited her village and introduced the idea of Purpose Groups—development groups that combine environmental efforts with community-led savings and loan activities. Purpose Groups not only provided financial support but also included training in entrepreneurship, business management, and soil conservation agriculture.

"We Owned It Ourselves"

Magdalena was immediately intrigued. Other savings options existed in her village, but they lacked transparency. “There was a group run by a different organization, but people’s money wasn’t secure, and they had no control over it,” she explains. “The idea of a group that we could own ourselves was very appealing.”

She joined without hesitation. Weekly, she set aside money, purchasing three shares at a time. “Saving wasn’t a challenge for me,” she says. “I just worried about whether I’d always have enough to invest.”

The first loan she took out was the equivalent of several months’ worth of savings. Magdalena’s bold move allowed her to expand the shop’s inventory. “I added essential products we had never been able to stock before,” she says. The investment paid off, and she was able to take out larger loans over time, each one fueling new growth.

A Business, A Home, A Future

Year after year, Magdalena and her husband reinvested their profits, taking calculated risks and applying the knowledge they gained from Purpose Group training.

“I took a bigger loan, and we were able to expand our inventory even more. We started selling clothes, soft drinks, and fuel,” she explains. Their improved selection and commitment to customer service attracted new buyers. “I learned a lot about business management from our training sessions. I shared what I learned with my husband, and we made excellent customer service one of our key focuses. That’s why we have so many loyal customers now.”

The shop’s success gave them the confidence to diversify. Magdalena used profits to buy a cow, launching a milk-selling business that generated additional income. “It was a great decision,” she says. “We were making enough money to buy fodder for the cow, and the extra income covered more of our household needs.”

Within a couple years, the business had grown into a wholesale and retail shop. The couple finally felt secure enough to build their dream home. “We started construction on a house with four bedrooms, a sitting room, a dining room, and a kitchen,” she shares proudly. “The other year, we moved in, even though we were still working on the finishing touches.”

With her newfound financial stability, Magdalena took out another loan last year—not out of desperation, but to enhance her business and complete her home. “I used part of it to expand the shop and the other part to finish the house.”

"Now I Can Help Others"

Looking around her community today, Magdalena sees a stark difference. Where once there was struggle, now there is hope. “My eldest daughter is a nurse and is married, my second child is studying mechanical engineering, and my youngest just finished university. Our shop is thriving, and life is good.”

More than anything, Magdalena is grateful. “I thank God for how far we have come. Many people in our village have seen our transformation, and I feel a calling to help others. By sharing my story, I want to inspire others to believe that they, too, can change their lives.”

She knows that the Purpose Group model works because it offers long-term sustainability. Unlike traditional aid, which has been critiqued for the risk of fostering long-term dependency, these groups empower people to take control of their own futures.

“We no longer need outside help to survive. Now, we support each other,” Magdalena explains. “I pray for God’s blessings upon this organization for all the incredible work it does to uplift rural communities. Their efforts make a significant difference in the lives of many, and I am truly grateful.”

Breaking the Cycle of Poverty for Good

Magdalena’s journey is a powerful example of what happens when people are given the tools to succeed. Purpose Groups are more than just a financial support system—they are a pathway to independence. Because of the generosity of Plant With Purpose’s supporters, Magdalena and thousands like her are no longer trapped in a cycle of poverty.

Instead, they are business owners, homeowners, and community leaders—proof that true sustainability is possible.

And as Magdalena’s shop continues to serve her village, she stands as a beacon of what’s possible when people are given the chance to thrive.
