How empowering women transforms families, communities, and the future
One of the most powerful drivers of change in Plant With Purpose’s work around the world is the very intentional inclusion of women. In many rural communities, women carry enormous responsibility. They care for children, manage households, grow food, and often keep families together through hardship. Yet too often, they have limited access to training, financial tools, land ownership, or leadership opportunities.
At Plant With Purpose, women’s inclusion is not just a token initiative. It is a proven strategy that drives the success of our programs worldwide. For decades, studies have shown that when women in a community are economically empowered, it benefits both families and the community as a whole.
“When women are economically empowered, they re-invest in their families and communities, producing a multiplier effect that spurs economic growth and contributes to global peace and stability.” - Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative
When women gain income, they often invest first in food, school fees, healthcare, and safer homes. These choices create both immediate relief and generational opportunity. And, when women step into leadership, they typically champion priorities that benefit everyone: clean water, sanitation, education, safety, and stronger community relationships.
That is why Plant With Purpose intentionally equips women with training in sustainable agriculture, savings and lending, environmental restoration, entrepreneurship, and leadership.
And because of supporters like you, women are rising.
“Better-educated women tend to be healthier, participate more in the formal labor market, earn more, marry at a later age, and provide better health care and education to their children.” – World Bank President Jim Yong Kim.
Meet Pendo: A Young Mother Carrying the Weight of Many

One woman who exemplifies the impact of empowerment is 21-year-old Pendo from Tanzania. At her young age, she has already lived through more hardship and borne more responsibility than many people do in a lifetime. She is a young mother, caring for a three-year-old daughter, her sick mother, and a younger brother. Pendo was trying to start a fabric business but she had little and struggled to support the family that depended on her. Her mother needed regular medication. Her brother needed school fees. Emergencies, especially hospital visits, created sudden financial crises.
This is a common story for mothers in many of the communities where we work. Often, men, desperate to meet their families' needs, will move away to find work in the city, in mines, or abroad. As a result, many mothers are left to provide for their families.
You are bringing hope to these mothers.
Creating the Ability to Dream

Two years ago, everything changed for Pendo. She attended a village meeting where Plant With Purpose staff explained how Purpose Groups work. These groups combine community saving, lending, business training, and financial literacy. Pendo says, "I knew that was the solution to the struggles I was facing. For the first time in a long time, I saw hope."
What she heard that day touched a deeper longing. She felt the desire not only for income, but for dignity, agency, and the ability to care for those she loved. "That idea gave me new energy to change my life," she says.
Pendo used the payout from her first savings cycle to fulfill a dream. "I used what I earned to buy timber and roofing sheets," she explains. "With that, I was able to build a small wooden salon kiosk." It was the first time she had ever built something that belonged entirely to her.
The Ripple Effect: From Home to the Community
Today, Pendo’s hair salon provides a steady income to support her family. She is now applying her acquired business skills to her fabric business, as well. As a result, Pendo now has what she long prayed for: enough to meet daily needs without fear.
"Now I can provide for my mother, brother, and daughter," she says proudly. "I can buy items we need at home. I can even contribute to social activities in my community. One of the things I treasure most is that I can now make tithes and contributions to my church," Pendo says. "Being in the group has strengthened my faith, my family, and my relationship with the community."
Her generosity is a sign of a deeper transformation: when women feel secure, they create security for others. When they experience hope, they share it.
Like so many women in our programs around the world, Pendo has become an ambassador for change. "I keep encouraging my fellow community members to join Purpose Groups," she says.
Mothers Changing the World

Across our global programs, we see that when mothers improve their economic standing, the first thing they typically do is educate their children. This is perhaps one of the single greatest acts to fight generational poverty.
Education, especially of girls, reduces poverty, child marriage, human trafficking, and gender-based violence. Educated girls have healthier children and earn higher incomes. (United Nations Women’s Initiative)
Pendo is a powerful example of how one empowered mother impacts a family, the next generation, and an entire community. And the beautiful thing is, Pendo is only one of tens of thousands of mothers in our program around the world. In fact, on average, 63% of our program participants are women, and in some countries it is as high as 78%!
Pendo, Francine, Maria Luisa, Lu Man, Emelyne ... the list goes on and on. These empowered women are multiplying the impact of your investment in them, helping entire communities to rise. They share, inspire, teach, and model; and their love and strength are shaping future generations.
