How one mother’s determination enables her children to become medical professionals
For many parents, the dream of seeing their children become doctors feels almost impossible. For Vumilia, a smallholder farmer in rural Tanzania, that dream once seemed far beyond reach.
Today, two of her children are studying medicine at university.
But the path from struggling farmer to proud mother of future doctors did not happen overnight. It began in a small savings group—and with the courage to believe that change was possible.
A Family Living Harvest to Harvest
Vumilia, 50, lives in the Shegena East watershed of Tanzania with her husband and their three children. Like most families in her community, they depend on farming for their livelihood.
For years, the family relied almost entirely on banana cultivation. Yet despite working hard in their fields, the harvests were poor and unpredictable.
“We depended almost entirely on banana farming, but the harvests were small,” Vumilia recalls. “On a good week, I would harvest only five bunches.”
Each bunch sold for about 8,000 Tanzanian shillings (about $3 USD), barely enough to meet the family’s basic needs.
Too often, the family faced impossible decisions.
“Sometimes my husband and I had to decide whether to buy food for today or save for our children’s school fees,” she says.
The problem wasn’t a lack of effort. Like many farmers in rural communities, Vumilia simply lacked access to the knowledge, tools, and financial resources needed to improve her harvests.
And without those opportunities, poverty continued to shape her family's future.
A Turning Point at Church

Everything began to change in 2023, when Vumilia attended a church service where a facilitator from Plant With Purpose introduced the concept of a Purpose Group.
This group would bring farmers together to save money, access small loans, and receive training in sustainable agriculture.
For Vumilia, the invitation came at exactly the right time.
“I was especially interested when they said we would learn improved farming techniques,” she says.
She decided to join.
That simple decision marked the beginning of a new chapter for her family.
Learning to Restore the Land

Soon after the savings group was formed, members began receiving training through Farmer Field Schools led by Plant With Purpose Tanzania.
For the first time, Vumilia learned practical methods for improving her banana production.
The training included:
- Proper spacing of banana plants
- Mulching to protect soil moisture
- Pruning to strengthen plant growth
- Using organic fertilizers to restore soil health
“When I applied these methods, the results were amazing,” she says.
Her banana plants became healthier. The fruit grew larger. And the harvest increased dramatically.
“Now I harvest 10 to 15 bunches each week, instead of five,” she says.
The improvement didn’t stop there. The quality of her bananas also increased, allowing her to sell each bunch for up to 18,000 Tanzanian shillings—more than double her previous income.
For the first time, the family could begin thinking beyond survival.
The Power of Community

Joining the savings group also changed something else: Vumilia’s relationship with her community.
Before, many farmers in Shegena East worked alone, focused only on getting through each season.
Through her Purpose Group, that isolation began to disappear.
“Whenever a member faces a challenge, the group comes together to support them,” Vumilia explains.
Members share knowledge, encourage one another, and sometimes help each other directly in the fields.
Inspired by the transformation in her own farm, Vumilia began sharing what she learned with other farmers in her village.
“I want others to benefit the way I have,” she says.
From Farmer to Businesswoman

Another major shift came through the savings component of the group.
Members contribute small amounts regularly and can access loans to invest in their farms or small businesses.
At first, the idea of borrowing money frightened Vumilia.
“One of the hardest decisions I made was taking my first loan,” she says.
With encouragement from the group, she borrowed 500,000 Tanzanian shillings to expand her farming activities.
The risk paid off.
She successfully repaid the loan, and with increased income from her harvests, she gained new confidence.
“I now see myself not just as a farmer,” she says with a smile.“I see myself as a businesswoman capable of providing for my family.”
A Mother’s Dream Fulfilled
Perhaps the most meaningful change in Vumilia’s life is the opportunity she has been able to give her children.
With improved income and better financial planning, she was able to pay university tuition for two of her children, Frank and Diana.
Both are now studying medicine.
For Vumilia, watching her children pursue careers in healthcare is deeply emotional.
“In the past, I didn’t believe I could change much about my life,” she says. “But today I’m proud that I was able to educate my children.”
Seeing them follow their dreams has restored her sense of dignity and hope.
“It gives me great joy to know that my children will serve others,” she says.
Giving Back to the Community
The transformation in Vumilia’s life hasn’t only benefited her family.
She has also become a respected leader and role model in her community.
Her faith has grown stronger, and she has become more active in church and community initiatives.
And she makes it a priority to share the blessings she has received.
“After every harvest, I give one or two banana bunches to families who are struggling,” she says.
She believes generosity is part of the reason her farm continues to thrive.
“I believe many of the blessings I have received come because of generosity,” she explains.
A Future Filled With Hope
Today, Vumilia’s life looks very different from just a few years ago.
Her family is financially stable. Her harvests continue to grow. Her children are pursuing higher education.
And she is determined to keep building on this progress.
Her next goal?
“To become the largest banana seller in the District,” she says with a joyful laugh.
Then she adds with pride:
“I want the whole community to know I have the best bananas.”
The Ripple Effect of Restoration
Vumilia’s story is a powerful reminder that transformation begins when farmers gain access to knowledge, community, and opportunity.
Through Plant With Purpose’s holistic approach—restoring land, access to savings and loans, and renewing hope—farmers like Vumilia are building futures that once seemed impossible.
And in her case, that future includes something remarkable: a farmer’s harvest raising the next generation of medical professionals.
